Nintendo had planned to diminish production of the Wii U ahead of the release of the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo formally announced the end of its production on January 31, 2017.

Did Nintendo Switch replace Wii U? Yes. Nintendo made the switch as their next console, not portable device. This puts it in line to replace the Wii U, which is a device they already said they won't be making games for anymore.
The marketing, lack of appealing third party games, confusion over the game pad, the name itself conveys it being a new version of the Wii when it was suppose to be its successor etc. Not enough compelling games, not enough games, not enough franchise variety. It failed because it didn't make sense.
The Wii was formally discontinued in October 2013, though Nintendo continued to produce and market the Wii Mini through 2017, and offered a subset of the Wii's online services through 2019.

Which Is Better, Nintendo Switch or Wii? It all boils down to personal preferences. The newer Nintendo Switch has better internal storage and a massive leap in processing power. It also resembles much of the Wii U, except it's a standalone device and isn't an auxiliary controller to the console.
These games utilize the backward compatibility of Wii U with Wii games in order to run, albeit without needing to explicitly access the Wii Menu. Games that can be played with the Classic Controller can also be played using the Wii U GamePad as a controller instead.
